Well, that's what I was sugesting.  FWIW, it also works on my Logitech
PS/2 wheel mouse...

Can't you map buttons to keys somewhere in XF86Config?  If so, couldn't
you just map buttons 4 and 5 to the up arrow and down arrow, or pgup/pgdn
or something similar?
