actually, aside from the defaults in
/etc/X11/XF86Config
i just replaced my Pointer settings within the file with:
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/2"
Device "/dev/psaux"
BaudRate 1200
Resolution 100
ZAxisMapping 4 5
Buttons 3
EndSection
This works for a true ms intellimouse.
