I'm not so sure what you're asking since you say it works in both
instances with -f, but I'll try something.  If it's whether there's a
default path chat looks for a program, I don't believe so.  At least I've
always just said the full path, like /etc/ppp/isp.chat.  Or you can just 
specify it to pppd instead of running chat yourself.  Check the man page 
for the right keyword :).
