Three.

    1) Try a stable kernel.  (You said you were using 2.3.5, right?
       2.2.x should be a better choice.)
    2) Try the NCR53C8XX driver instead of the SYM53C8XX driver.  (You
       *might* have one of the slightly buggy cards/chipsets that the
       SYM53C8XX dropped support for.)
    3) Double-check your cabling, termination, etc.  (Actually, this
       should probably be #1.)
