Computerfest

We need to start planning for our booth at Computerfest. (For those
of you who haven't been paying attention, Computerest is March 13, and
you definitely want to be there. See
http://www.springfieldcomputers.org/ for more information.)

First, we need volunteers to man the booth. If you can even be there
for an hour, your help would be appreciated. If you can be there
all/most of the day, even better. (BTW, we *will* have some kind of
social event after the show for people who help out.)

Second, I would like us to try setting up a little cluster again. We
can do PVM Povray on it again, plus if anybody can find any other good
eye candy that would show off the cluster, let us know. To do the
cluster right, we're going to need networking hardware. I'd *really*
like us to have some 100 megabit hardware, and I've tried hitting up a
couple of networking hardware vendors for a loan, but so far I haven't
had any kind of response. If anybody has any contacts with vendors
that might want to loan us some hardware, by all means contact them.
Otherwise, we'll have to use 10 megabit again. Of course, in any case
we'll need people to bring their (Pentium or higher, the faster the
better) systems in the night before (if at all possible) so we can set
up.

Third, I want to show off some of the interesting non-x86 hardware
that Linux runs on. I have an Alpha and a Netwinder (StrongARM), plus
it looks like we'll be sharing an UltraSPARC (on loan from Sun,
dual-booting with Solaris and Linux) with the Unix group. That leaves
us needing PPC, MIPS, SPARC (original), m68k, and probably other stuff
I'm forgetting. If anybody has access to any of that sort of
hardware, see if you can bring it. (Any interesting Unix boxes are
also welcome, BTW.)

Fourth, we need to get a serious turn-out for this event, and I don't
just mean Linux people (although I don't mind a lot of us there
either :). Start telling everyone you know who is even vaguely
interested in computers about the show. It *will* be worth attending.
(At some point, Kara or I will sit down and write up a little summary
of what we know is going on for everybody.) Remember, Computerfest is
a non-profit organization/event, so if nothing else the money we make
goes to local schools and such.

That leaves me with one more thing... Unfortunately, with my work
schedule and all the other stuff I have going on, somebody else is
going to have to take the lead on all this. We don't have much time,
so one or more of you needs to volunteer, quick. :-)

Let's try to keep a discussion going here on the list. If you have
something you want to discuss that you don't think is appropriate for
the list, email me and Kara (kara@luci.org), since I can't swear that
I'm going to be anything close to responsive with my email.
