RPM's under Slackware

Someone on here posted a while back that RPM would install and work under
Slackware. I have Slack 3.5 and have went through the RPM compile and
install with NO ERRORS, and still, when i go to install a package i get

"error: cannot open //var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm"

I looked and there is no /var/lib/rpm directory so something is
amiss...Anyone here have an idea?
