Thanks so much for the help.
You mentioned

This solved the issue.

When you mentioned the NS server didn't show up when it did earlier I 
thought I should call the registrar to eliminate them as the possible 
source of my issue.

A helpful tech at Godaddy told me it may be caused by VeriSign's change 
to circular nameserver references on March 1, 2010 in preparation for 
DNSSEC.

My gut feeling from all the reading I've done is that there are still 
things I need to fix other than the changes you suggested which was to 
create A records for each name server.

I did this for the main server that Godaddy points to and it seems to 
have cured the issue however...
Should do this to every VPS on the server or just for the main server 
which at this point seems to have cured the issue.

You also mentioned;
 > "it might be nice if your SOAs matched your glue records."
I'm not sure I understand what you mean
