squid running out of file descriptors

On Solaris, I simply added the following to /etc/system file to
increase the maximum file descriptors per process:

        set rlim_fd_max = 4096
        set rlim_fd_cur = 1024

On Linux, they point me to a document that is 2 years old and doesn't
seem to apply (http://www.linux.org.za/filehandle.patch.linux/). 
Does anyone have an up-to-date fix for this?
