Do you have the SCSI General module loaded as well (or compiled in)?
That probably needs loading before the ncr5c8xx module. Then when the
ncr one's loaded it should have the scanner info listed in
/var/log/messages as it scans the SCSI bus.

cat /proc/scsi/scsi
That should also list the scanner name, id number, etc.
