osiris:~$ telnet localhost 80
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.

In other words, telnet to port 80, type "HEAD / HTTP/1.0" and hit
enter twice.
("printf 'HEAD / HTTP/1.0\r\n\r\n' | nc localhost 80" also works
nicely, if you have netcat installed.)
