Modem Problems

I a, having this small problem getting my modem online.
It don't work lol. I get the text modem is busy. I am runnign 
Caldera2.2 and using a Zoom 56K-PCI modem. I really need help before 
i just chuck linux for something i know works :-(  
I would like to keep Linux and chuck Bill Gates but without online 
access its useless for me to keep this. 

P.S.  
this is my third modem -- 2 Cardinal 56K's and both failed.
