This sounds a lot like what happens to the HP boxes at work that don't
seem to know how to auto-negotiate properly. (Or, who knows, maybe
the switch is confusing them.) The fix there is usually to just force
the switch and the NIC to something they agree on (usually 100 Mbit
full-duplex in this case).
Maybe auto-negotiation on these cards are broke too. You should poke
around Don Becker's site to see if there's a utility to control the
cards *or* if there's a newer driver. There will be links to his site
from www.beowulf.org.
