I think Jeff mentioned booting the system from a floppy and trying
diagnostics from there. I don't know if he mentioned what is
apparently the ultimate Linux-system-on-a-floppy, "tomsrtbt",
available from
http://www.toms.net/rb/
Try to boot from that and run "fdisk -l /dev/hda" (or whatever your
disk is). Make sure your partition table looks right. Assuming
everything looks OK, you should be able to run "e2fsck -f -v -c
/dev/hdaN" (where N is the partition number) to check the filesystem
and check for bad blocks.
