You might check out the O'Reily "X-Windows system administareator's guide"
and teh similar but much larger users guide by the same publisher. I've
had extremely good luck with teh O'Reily books, and have never heard
anyone gripe at them (I don't have the users guide though - it's probably
pretty good).

KDE saves desktop configuration. KDE-specific apps will save tehir state
when you properly log off, other x apps will be restarted, but their state
will not be saved.
Of course, I'm sure there are a few out there that don't like KDE 'cause
it's a bit bloated:
SIZE SWAP RSS SHRD LIB DT COMMAND
2164 0 2164 1812 0 88 kbgndwm
2364 0 2364 1952 0 103 kwm
2372 0 2372 1988 0 96 krootwm
4320 0 4320 2276 0 511 kpanel
4940 0 4940 3204 0 434 kfm
Granted, this is after being up for about a week, and a few of those
things kinda leak (as does my X server). But who leaves X up for a week?
:) This is also beta3, there's a beta4 out now which is supposed to be a
little better.
