Went through this myself recently, man mkinitrd is probably your best bet.

PS you don't need an initrd for GRUB, but you do need it depending on
whether you configured your kernel with the necessary drivers to boot your
system (ext2, ext3, ide-disk or scsi et al). Both GRUB and LILO can be
configured to boot with or without the initrd.
