"Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL"

I bought the above book a year or so back when I was learning the
basics of PHP and MySQL at the same time. I found that once I had read
through it and worked through some of the examples that I knew enough
to find the other things I needed in the online PHP and MySQL
documentation.
The web site offers sample chapters so you can get a feel for the
writing style before you purchase. There are articles and some
tutorial material on the site as well.
I've found PHP to be a pretty capable scripting language for the web
site and stand alone command line tasks. Having said that I should say
I've never looked into Perl which has a huge following and many
examples of fine script applications.
