Fan the flames of PHP

I probably shouldn't but oh well. To follow on from what Steven was saying last night. I was in
Barnes and Noble this morning, scouring their PHP books. I came up with the following.

There is a DB abstraction layer in PHP (now?).

There are preg (Perl Regular Expression) functions that supposedley perform the same way as Perl
does, they have so far for me, but I haven't used anything really complicated yet.
