A first but certainly not a last step, IBM eServer xSeries running SuSE
Enterprise Server 8 are now certified under the "Common Criteria"
(international standard ISO 15408) by the US federal government. This
allows them to be used under various security classifications, including
for mission critical military applications. Although the security level
granted thus far is only "low to moderate," you can be sure additional
combinations and certifications will follow.
Earlier this year, Red Hat Enterprise Linux was the first distribution
to be DoD Common Operating Environment (COE) certified on an IBM eServer
xSeries.
