ppp0 problem

Anyone had experience with this?

My ppo0 DSL connection keeps alternating between active and inactive at
a timed interval of approximately 10 seconds unless the connection is
actively transferring data to and fro :-).

Is this a common problem and if so is there an easy way to stop this
from happening and make it stay active?
