Um. For applications that use a meatspace hostname of "localhost". 
*something* has to turn that "name" into an IP address. And there's no such 
beast in the DNS tree, unless it's a hardcoded response in the resolver 
libraries, which would, IMHO, be an incredibly dumb idea. So, it goes into 
/etc/hosts.
