Ick.  The disk dying is *very* likely.

Two things I would try...  First, if you get another Oops, try to
record it somewhere (even if it means <*shudder*> writing it down by
hand).  Second, try just upgrading the kernel to 2.4.18-5smp, just in
case it is a software problem.
