php for apache as a non-dso

i am reading over the online docs for php on php.net

  http://www.php.net/manual/en/install.apache.php

and the directions look pretty straightforward. i have apache installed 
from source. i compiled, *without* using --enable-shared. the php 
documentation seems to take for granted that DSO support is enabled in 
apache. i have the php4 rpms installed on my machine already, is there a 
method like "AddModule php-foo /usr/lib/apache/libphp4.so" that i can load 
php support without having to go back and recompile php and apache?
