Upgrade to rpm 3.0.5 or higher (in the Red Hat 6.2 updates or from
ftp.rpm.org) or rpm 4.0 (ftp://ftp.rpm.org/pub/rpm/dist/rpm-4.0.x/).

I upgraded to rpm 4 on my box a couple of weeks ago...  It actually
seems to be quite nice.  Because of the switch to a newer version of
Berkeley DB, the RPM database is *much* smaller, and searches are
noticeably faster.
