physical hard drive problems?

I am receiving the following errors in the log for /dev/hdd
The device stops responding, but still appears mounted.
I have tried re-fdisk on the device, and rerunning mkfs.ext2 on it, and
still the same error occurs after a matter of time, 10-12 hours or so.
