automounter

Hi,

What is /etc/mtab? automount isn't working for a removable drive and the
only error message I get is this (from /var/log/messages):

Jul 22 21:45:10 localhost automount[336]: >> can't create lock file
/etc/mtab~~: No such file or directory (use -n flag to override)
Jul 22 21:45:10 localhost automount[336]: /mnt/ez: mount failed!       

Is mtab something automount uses or is it something I must configure?
