usernames that begin with a number

now that i have spent the better part of an evening writing a script that
will rewrite /etc/passwd and /etc/group so that a username can begin with
a number, is there any way to do this with just the useradd binary?

whenever i would try 'useradd 1main', i would get an error stating 'bad
username' or some such nonsense. is there a flag on useradd that i have
missed that would have saved me about 4 hours work :)
