You'll want to look at:

 - SANE (http://panda.mostang.com/sane/)
 - gPhoto (http://www.gphoto.org/)

Also, you can use a PCMCIA adapter for the flash cards the Kodak
cameras use.  With one of these, the flash card looks like a hard
drive; you mount it using an MSDOS filesystem and copy the files.
