Would it really harm anything just to let a window pop up and play, then
exit?  Just set up a shortcut to NT's sound recorder (isn't that what it's
called?  Been a long time...) to run minimized, and use that if you don't
wanna see the window.  So you get an extra icon in the task bar for a
moment, then it goes away.  There are worse things that could happen under
NT. :)
