font problem starting X

okay, something within /tmp is related to starting up X/enlightenment.
what strikes me as odd however is even though I tar cfp the tmp directory,
and restore it on a new partition, X is unable to run unless I boot with
my /tmp partition being read from the drive partition that is giving me
such a problem. ls -a shows that in my tar i am not missing any files, and
permissions are the same as well.
