Xlib and $DISPLAY

I am getting the following error when attempting to install gnome:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
==> Cleaning up temporary files...done.

I am running rh6.1. For my display i get:

[root]# echo $DISPLAY
:0.0

Is there a problem with my gtk install? or is there an x setting that
needs to be set?
