Graphical splash screens on bootup

And speaking of boot-time graphics, does anyone know how to do that? I
think it has something to do with fbcon, right? I'm hoping to avoid
altering lilo.conf - I would rather compile this into the kernel.

So, I want a splash screen immeadiately after the LILO ..... message -
how does one do this?
