LUCI: Tuesday, May 24, 2005 meeting

The next meeting of the Linux Users of Central Illinois will be
Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at 7 pm at the Illinois State Museum Research
and Collections Center at 1011 East Ash Street in Springfield. If you
need directions, there's a link to maps and driving directions on the
LUCI site.

We're going to have a guest speaker at Tuesday's meeting. Steve
Hargadon from Technology Rescue will be talking about LTSP.

The Linux Terminal Server Project is an add-on package for Linux
allowing numerous low-powered "thin client" terminals (or recycled
computers) to connect to a Linux server. Applications then run on
the server, while accepting input and displaying output on the thin
clients. An office or computer lab can be constructed using one
powerful server and many inexpensive thin clients -- old PCs, for
example. Configuration and upgrades are then centralized at the
server, rather than distributed to numerous expensive desktops.

K12LTSP, a popular solution for schools with limited budgets, is a
distribution of Linux based on Red Hat Fedora and the LTSP packages.
Steve Hargadon has installed K12LTSP in Hawaii, California, Utah,
and Indiana. He is currently working with the Canadian government
to install thin client labs in 2,000 schools in Kenya, Africa.

Please encourage administrators from your local schools to hear this
presentation if they are struggling to provide stable computing
  resources on limited budgets.

I can say from personal experience that LTSP is really cool, so this
should be an interesting presentation.

I'll see you all on Tuesday. :-)
