scsi problems

I'm still unsuccessful at getting anywhere with this new scsi adapter
and scanner.  I believe (?) I've got a module loaded, but I have no idea
where to go from here.

Here's a break-down of the steps I've taken:

1) compiled a 2.3.5 kernel with modular support for the sym53c8xx and
ncr53c8xx scsi controllers
2) added alias scsi_hostadapter sym53c8xx  to my /etc/conf.modules
3) as root, type "/sbin/insmod ncr53c8xx"
4)  run scanimage

scanimage says "no devices found"

What steps have I missed?  What is the proper sequence to perform?  How
can I verify that the host adapter and the scanner are being recongized?
