I have had very similar problems.  When I called tech support he told me
to check and make sure my cables were pinned correctly.  I had all the
pins running straight-through, but one thing I didn't know about was
something called crosstalk that is not very essential in 10mbps or short
100mbps, but *is* essential in longer 100mbps lines.  If the pins in your
RJ45 plug look similar to this:

OW-O GW-G BlW-Bl BrW-Br  try switching to
OW-O GW-Bl BlW-G BrW-Br
 
It made my stuff work, though I think you still can't go over a certain
distance without a switch.  I don't know what that distance is though. Is
there anybody out there with more experience who can tell us what's going
on?
