Yep.  Press Cntrl-Alt-F1 or whatever F-key you have a term or getty on.

When back on console, Alt-FX works as usual.  You can get back to X by
switching to the F-key directly after your last terminal.

(ie, slackware and RH by default come with 6 logins mapped to F1 - F6.  While
in console, pressing Alt-F7 would switch back to the :0 X desktop if one was
running)
