Printers

Okay guys.. It's my turn to receive help from the vast knowledge base out
here..

Printing.

I'm trying to set up an HP Deskjet 855C on RH 5.2 running 2.2.5 kernel.

The X printer configurator isn't detecting /dev/lp0. All the
CONFIG_PARPORT stuff is compiled in the kernel, as is the CONFIG PRINTER.
When attempting to test the printer, I get messages like:

Apr 27 14:54:57 pritchard modprobe: can't locate module parport_lowlevel
Apr 27 14:54:57 pritchard kernel: lp: driver loaded but no devices found

in /var/log/messages. But in the window I get: Error printing test page,
reason: lpr: connect: connection refused jobs queued, but cannot start
daemon. However..

root 284 0.0 0.2 784 336 ? S 14:54 0:00 lpd
root 288 0.0 0.3 808 392 ? S 14:54 0:00 lpd

lpd is already loaded.

I'm terribly confused. What silly little thing am I missing here?

I'm not leaving until this works.. So hopefully I'll get to see you guys
at the meeting ;)
