problems authenticating for pop3

I am using RH5.2, and I am unable to authenticate for pop3. My
/etc/pam.d/imap says:

auth       required     /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
account    required     /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so

I have imap-4.4-2 installed. When I attempt to use a different pop3 server
such as qpopper, pop cannot authenticate any users, although the passwords
are correct. I am really uncertain how linux goes about authenticating
users for pop3, so I am at a loss on where to look next.
