To boot your hard drive's current system by making a bootable floppy:
 dd if=/kernel.image.to.use of=/dev/fd0
 rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/rootdevice

To make a bootable lilo disk, read the boot-disk howto :)

To boot a somehow broken system (such as one that's got a forgotten root
password), download one of the myriad of single-disk linuxi intended for
rescue systems, such as Tom's Root/boot, picoboot, microlinux, trinux
(actually 3 disks, but...), monkeylinux, etc. I forget where they're all
kept, but a quick search for single disk linux will turn them up pretty
quickly.
