There's a file that specifies the image path -
/var/X11R6/lib/WindowMaker/Defaults/WindowMaker. It's cpoied to your home
directory (~/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker) the first time you run it. You
need to specify the path to the background images there, and then change the
one in /var after you get it working so any other users aren't messed up...

Mine is ------- PixmapPath = (
    "~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/Pixmaps",
    "~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/Backgrounds",
    "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/WindowMaker/Pixmaps",
    "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/WindowMaker/Backgrounds",
    "/usr/X11R6/include/X11/pixmaps",
    "/usr/local/share/pixmaps",
    "/usr/share/pixmaps"
----------

There's a pile of other stuff in tha file too, btw. The themes are in
/var/X11R6/lib/WindowMaker/Themes and in
~/GnuStep/Library/WindowMaker/Themes on my system.

The background images should be named the same as the themes - I think
that's how they're loaded (but I'm not positive). It's something to try...
