I poked around LDP files, looked at some books I have,
and that's a *good* question.  I know that it signifies file
type, that "l" means "link,"  that "d" means "directory."
Device files are often preceded by a "b" or a "c."  One of
the few statements I found on the topic:  "There are also
some other more exotic classes.  These are beyond the scope
of this chapter."  Thanks, and every other chapter evidently.

Anybody know of a full list of these?
