Are you building it into the kernel, or trying that crazy module thing? :)
If you built it into the kernel, at boot time you'll get the device in
little angley brackets <device> if you dis something funny like using the
wrong IRQ / DMA / whatever.  I assume you've checked that already during
your extensive debugging...  My Awe32 works fine under 2.0.35, using the
32/64 driver, so the problem's possibly a "user miconfiguration" or a
hardware problem...  You got any other weird stuff in there that may be
interferring w/ the sound card?
