Debian

Well I decided to try Debian.  I got the base system installed but when I
tried downloading all the packages it wouldn't connect via ftp.  I played
around with it a bit and found that I can telnet to the other machine
that's on the same HUB as me, but I cannot telnet OR ftp anywhere else.  I
know that DNS and routing are working because I can ping to anywhere. 
Inetd is running.  Could my machine not be sending/receiving correctly? 
Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks.
